Enbrel: Prescribed To Help Those Combat Rheumatoid Arthritis

According to the Centers for Disease Control, nearly 1.5 million Americans suffer from rheumatoid arthritis, making it hard for them to complete day-to-day activities.   • Unusual cancers have been reported in patients under 18 years of age that are taking tumor necrosis factor (TNF) blockers.
  • Prior to taking Enbrel, talk to your doctor if you have TB or been around someone with TB, diabetes, HIV, or an already weakened immune system. Any other medical conditions should be mentioned to your doctor before taking Enbrel. This includes open cuts or sores, heart failure, hepatitis B, pregnant, if you may become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Before taking Enbrel, tell your doctor if you have lived or traveled to areas where there is a greater risk for certain kinds of fungal infections, such as histoplasmosis. These areas may include Ohio, Mississippi River Valleys, or Southwest.
  • Tell your doctor about all other medications you are taking prior to taking Enbrel, including anti-diabetic meds, vitamins, and any over-the-counter medications.
  • Enbrel may cause serious side effects which include new infections or worsening infections you have already had.
  • Common side effects include reactions around injection sites and upper respiratory infections.

If you begin to notice severe allergic reactions, prolonged side effects, or new or worsening signs of infection, then call your doctor immediately and seek medical attention if necessary.

Is there an Enbrel generic available?
